Look Expensive on a Broke Babe Budget: Accessories

Looking expensive doesn't necessarily mean wearing the boldest, the most, or the trendiest things you can. It also, shockingly enough, doesn't have to cost $$$ or more to look like your'e worth $$$ or more. When I say "expensive" I mean more polished, high fashion, cool, and edgy- typically styles that require pieces that are more costly. But in order to emulate looks like this that you may see all over Instagram, Twitter, or on your favorite celebrity, you don't have to break the bank. One of the easiest ways to make an outfit look more put together is by accessorizing.

Too many people make the mistake of overly accessorizing, however. This does the opposite of what you want; by wearing too many accessories at once (for example: trendy shoes, tons of necklaces, bracelets, rings, a hat, etc.) you overpower the rest of your outfit. Instead of looking cool and fashionable, you'll tend to look cheap and somewhat gaudy. Accessories should be added as an afterthought, not to distract from the overall look. They should be placed on thoughtfully, not haphazardly. In today's post I'm letting you in on some of my favorite ways to accessorize, some tips that I've learned, and some accessories that I wear often or am planning on purchasing soon. As always, just click an image to be brought to the link for each item!

1. Mix Your Metals

This might not be everyone's favorite tip, but ever since I heard it from one of my favorite Instagram girls (@sweetteawithmadi) I just can't stop doing it. Personally, I really like mixing silver and gold rings and bracelets more so than necklaces. I think it makes a statement without being too in your face. It creates interesting contrast, and is an easy way to make your outfits more cohesive if the clothing you're wearing each have different colored hardware.

2. Wear More Rings

Something about a good stack of rings just makes you look luxe. Kind of going along with #1, I've been really enjoying mixing and matching the rings I wear, playing with different heights, and alternating between going more simple and going more bold. If you decide to wear a ton of rings (I'm talking every finger, ladies) it can be done (sometimes) but make sure to keep every other accessory minimal. Like at the most, wear a pair of stud earrings and you're good to go. Like I said before, too many items of jewelry can be distracting and overpowering, so try to have a good balance of statement rings and more simple ones.

(Silver ring is a Cartier ring dupe with 5 star reviews!)

3.Sunglasses are a Power Move

Sunglasses can really take your outfit to the next level. Look at any celebrity and you can tell that when they wear a cool pair of sunnies they look so much more confident and elite. Whether you're using your sunglasses for functionality or for aesthetics, make sure they suit your face and fit the vibe of the rest of your outfit. They're also just a fun way to express yourself! And nothing looks more edgy than trying out odd or interesting styles that you normally wouldn't find at your average mall. Another good use for sunglasses is to use them in lieu of other accessories. For instance, instead of wearing a hat or headband to fill up space, you can put your sunglasses on your head. Or instead of necklaces, just hang the sunnies on the front of your shirt.

4. Play Around with Hair Accessories

Large headbands, hair scarves, clips, and pins are extremely trendy at the moment, so much so that even celebrities are wearing them. They add so much detail and texture to a look, and just like rings or necklaces you can stack and layer them to suit your own tastes and your outfit.

5. Play with Length

Using jewelry, scarves, or hair accessories with varying different lengths can make so many different outfits look more fashionable. Layering necklaces can add intrigue and draw the eye to the pretty details of a top (especially if it's low-cut) and draw attention to your own features. Mixing dangly earrings with studs, midi rings with normal ones, and even playing with the thicknesses of bracelets can add a lot of dimension to an outfit. When it can help an outfit look more effortless and designer, which is the whole point of looking more "expensive".
